Frequently asked questions

What is the relationship between Codealike and Torc?

Codealike was acquired and relaunched by Torc, a global talent marketplace for software developers. You do not need to be a member of the Torc community to use Codealike. However, additional Codealike features may be available if you are a member of both communities. There is no cost to join Codealike or Torc.

Why did Torc acquire Codealike?

Torc and Codealike share a similar mission—to improve the developer experience and create career opportunities for remote developers around the world. We believe the best way to do that is through data.

Through data, you can learn more about how you code, how you collaborate, where you get stuck, how you can find and stay in your zone, and more. Through data, you can become a stronger and more productive developer. Through data, you can craft a compelling and personalized story that helps you earn more money or find your next career opportunity.

Together, Torc + Codealike empower developers to be their best and build successful careers.

Is Codealike changing due to Torc's acquisition?

Yes but it’s a good change! For a limited time, members of both the Torc and Codealike communities can access Codealike’s Premium features for free. No other changes are planned at this time and we plan to continue building out Codealike’s features to become even more valuable for you.

Does Codealike have access to my source code?

No. We guarantee that your source code files are not uploaded to our servers. Our servers only host information regarding your account, your email, and statistical data from your source code. For further information, please refer to our Terms of Use.

Why should I use Codealike?

Data is power, so the saying goes. But that’s only true if you have access to data, can organize and create insights from that data, and do something with the data. Codealike was built to empower software developers through access to, and actionable insights from, your data. Whether you want to get a new job, perform better at your current one, collaborate more effectively, or get more done with less time—Codealike can help.

Codealike gathers metadata from your IDE and/or web browser in a non-intrusive and secure way, and only gathers metadata that you approve. The platform then organizes that data such that you can visualize your coding performance and draw insights about how to become an even stronger developer.

What are Premium features and do I have to pay for them?

Users on the Basic (free) plan have access to all of Codealike's core features that enable you to measure when you're In the Zone, analyze your activities and identify potential technical debt, share your analysis with others, use any of our IDE and browser plugins, and retain ownership of your data.

Users on the Premium plan have access to additional features that capture more granular data and enhance your insights, as well as the ability to download your data and manipulate it however you’d like.

For a limited time, Codealike users who also sign up with Torc using the same email address and create Torc profile that is at least 80% complete will get access to Premium features for free for 12 months.

Do I need to create an account in order to use Codealike?

Yes. You can create a Codealike account, or access it through any of the authentication providers we support like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or Github on the public and private cloud. For on-premise authentication, we support Windows authentication.

Does Codealike rank my performance?

Codealike includes a ranking feature which compares your performance with that of the Codealike community. Ranking is defined by a model that takes into account your concentration level during a work day. In other words, more activity time and less interruptions during the week will result in a better ranking position.

Does Codealike analyze team work?

Premium users can create a team and invite other members to join. Codealike then provides aggregated statistics and insights for both you and your team.

What does Codealike do with the data collected from users?

The data Codealike’s algorithms use to provide you with personalized insights is your data. We do not sell your data. You choose what data to share with Codealike, and control what data is shared with others. We may use anonymous and aggregated data from all users on the Codealike platform to generate insights and reports, and a small subset of your non-sensitive metadata is used for ranking and comparison features, including your Codealike username, historical ranking, number of days you were “On Fire” in the last 12 months, primary coding languages used in the past 12 months, and primary activities in the past 12 months (e.g., Coding, Debugging, Building). See our Privacy Policy for additional details.

If I’m hired for a job through Torc will my Codealike data be shared with my supervisor?

No, we take data privacy very seriously and do not share your data without your permission.

What are the requirements to use Codealike?

In order to use Codealike, you will need to create an account, ensure you are using the latest version of your preferred IDE or web browser, and install the plugin(s) for your IDE and web browser.

Does Codealike affect the performance of my IDE?

We take performance issues very seriously. If you experience difficulties, please let us know via the Help & Support page.

Can I use Codealike if I don't have internet access?

Codealike will continue to capture metadata when you work offline, but an internet connection is required for your IDE and web browser to send data to our servers for analysis.

Codealike doesn't have a plugin for my preferred IDE. Can you create one?

We know how important it is to use your preferred development tools. That’s why we’ve built 18 (and counting) plugins for IDEs and browsers. If your preferred IDE or browser isn’t currently supported, please let us know what you use and we will add it to our roadmap.

Can I request a new Codealike feature or report?

Absolutely. If you have a new feature request or general product feedback, we’d love to hear it. Please let us know.
